What is the best way to mark a quilt top without permanently marking it?

I’m hand sewing the quilt top and made my own stencils for quilt motifs. I don’t want to damage the quilt I’ve worked so hard on.

I’m doing the same thing! Walmart makes a great pen that fades with time (2 - 3 minutes) for lighter fabrics (only costs a couple of bucks) and is a purple color. I’m also using chalk and a Q-Tip inside my stencils for dark fabric. Washes off with a damp rag. Good Luck on yours!
